Leighton Buzzard Win Junior League Gala
On Saturday 2 July, Leighton Buzzard Swimming Club’s younger swimmers took part in Round 2 of the 2011 Milton Keynes and District Junior League gala. This was held at Tiddenfoot Leisure Centre and LBSC were swimming against clubs from Chesham, Maxwell (Aylesbury), Putteridge and Newport Pagnall.
Leighton Buzzard won sixteen of the events. Individual event winners were Connor Ferguson, Jacob Murtagh (2), Bethany Twitchell, Benjamin Howells, George Carter (2), Elise Crick, Tom Faulkner and Mollie Twitchell. The winning relay teams were: the girls 100m medley team of Maisy Rose, Eden Horwood, Lauren Wright and Amy Edwins, the boys 100m freestyle team of George Carter, Jacob Murtagh, Sasha Emburey and James Cripps, the girls 100m medley team of Freya Payne, Bethany Twitchell, Ella Hallwood and Lauren Faulkner, the girls 100m freestyle team of Lauren Wright, Maisy Rose, Eden Horwood and Amy Edwins, the boys 100m medley team of James Cripps, Jacob Murtagh, George Carter and Filipe Cascais-Davis, the girls 100m freestyle team of Mollie Twitchell, Zoe Bisby, Megan Desmond, and Elise Crick,
Well done to the 11 swimmers achieving new personal best times (‘PB’s’). These were Zoe Bisby, Lauren Faulkner (3), Alfie Lay (2), George Carter, Connor Ferguson (2), Kiera Rogers, Bethany Twitchell, Lauren Wright, Freya Payne, James Cripps and Mollie Twitchell.
The final event, the Cannon Relay, involving 8 swimmers from each club (4 girls and 4 boys) swimming in ascending ages is always hugely popular and the LBSC squad came in second to rapturous cheering and applause!
Graeme Bell, Assistant Coach at LBSC was delighted with the result and had noting but praise for the youngsters saying “They were tremendous. We won despite several members of the squad not being available on the day. A truly great effort by everyone!” Graeme went on to say that LBSC were now looking forward to participating in the 3rd and final round on 10th September.
The final result of the gala was Leighton Buzzard 1st with 202 points, 2nd Newport Pagnall with 195 points, 3rd was Maxwell ‘B’ on 193 points, 4th was Chesham on 176 points and 5th Putteridge on 133 points.

On Saturday, a strong squad from Leighton Buzzard Swimming Club travelled over to Aylesbury’s ‘Aquavale Pool’ for the Aylesbury & District Swimming Club’s ‘Trophy Gala’. LBSC were swimming against some of the top clubs in the area including Maxwell, Aylesbury & District, Henley, Hemel Hempstead, Kidlington and Tring.
The squad achieved 5 first places and 11 second places and with many great swims, achieved an over all second place out of eight. Thirteen swimmers also achieved new ‘life time’ bests (PB’s) in individual events.
Swimmers achieving first places in individual events where Jessica Payne in the 100m butterfly and Will Shaw in the boys 50m butterfly. In the relay team events, the 10 year old girls (Lauren Wright, Bethany Twitchell, Lucy Keith and Tilly Sharman) won their medley event, the 10 year old boys (Ben Morris, Connor Ferguson, William Shaw and Fillipe Cascais-Davis) won their medley event and the 14 year old girls (Debbie Jewell, Sophie Page, Katy Casterton and Kayleigh Russell) won their medley event.
Swimmers gaining those all important second places in individual events were: Charlie Smith, Lauren Wright, Katy Casterton, Maisy Rose, Sammy Humphrey, Lucy Keith, Louis Bell and Kayleigh Russell.
The thirteen swimmers achieving new ‘personal best’ times were: Alicia Anderhub, Will Abbott, Charlie Smith, Jessica Payne, Sam Twitchell, Sophie Page, Tom Faulkner, Louis Bell, Will Shaw, Lucy Keith, Jacob Murtagh, Kayleigh Russell and Joe McGarry.
The gala was time banded and those with super-speed packs on and going too fast were: Alicia Anderhub, Will Abbott, Michael Judd, Sam Twitchell and Tom Faulkner. Well done!
A special mention should be made of birthday girl Lauren Wright who had her party a day early so that she could swim in the gala!
Club Chair Lesley Cox-Smith was over the moon with the result of the gala and said ‘I’m absolutely delighted that the squad did so well against such strong opposition’.
The final result of the gala was: Aylesbury 1st on 233 points, Leighton Buzzard 2nd on 230 points, Henley 3rd on 200 points, Kidlington 4th on 182 points, Hemel Hempstead 5th on 181 points, Maxwell Swans 6th on 178 points, Maxwell SC 7th on 173 and Tring 8th on 161 points.
On Saturday evening Leighton Buzzard Swimming Club ran a novice gala to provide younger and less experienced swimmers with the opportunity to compete against other swimming clubs. The gala took place at Tiddenfoot Leisure Centre and was against Thame, Letchworth and Linslade Crusaders.
There were 41 events in the gala and LBSC swimmers won 17. Those winning individual events were: Alfie Lay, Gracie Trotter (2), Elise Crick, Zoe Bisby, Fionn Bell, Connor O’Gorman, Tory Van Der Hoven, Alicia Anderhub (2), Connor Ferguson, Kieran Hawkes, Jake Bulmer and Frazer Hughes.
The LBSC relay teams won 3 events. Swimmers in those teams were: Rachel Smith, Georgina Hawkes, Tory Van Der Hoven and Sophie Page in the girls open freestyle relay, Maddie Van Der Hoven, Mathilde Sammon, Alicia Anderhub and Tilly Sharman in the girls 11 and under freestyle relay and the team of Bethany Twitchell, Connor Ferguson, Elise Crick, George Carter, Sophie Page, Kieran Hawkes, Rachel Smith and Joe McGarry had a magnificent 9 second win in the final ‘Squadron Relay’ event.
LBSC’s Junior Coach Graeme Bell was delighted with the result saying ‘We had so many youngsters and less experienced swimmers in this gala and they all tried so hard. Great result!’
LBSC swimmers achieved twenty five great new personal best times (PB’s) and these were by: Jake Bulmer (2), Chloe Harding, Alphie Lay, Gracie Trotter, Adam Sandiford, Elise Crick (2), Louis Forbes Wright, Zoe Bisby (2), Fionn Bell, Connor O’Gorman, Tory Van Der Hoven, Joe McGarry, Alicia Anderhub (2), Connor Ferguson (2), Kieran Hawkes, Ashleigh Fisher, Ben Grice, Holly Reilly, Alfie Lay and Ross Gregory.

Open Meets are where you enter races as an individual swimmer, racing against swimmers from other clubs. It gives the swimmer the opportunity to swim a variety of events,improve their individual times and all the times are registered on the ASA rankings database. You have to be 9 years and over to enter Open Meets.
Leighton Buzzard May Open Meet: yes our very own Open Meet! So we are looking to get as many of you to enter this one day meet, on Sunday 19th May. This year ,we have widened the entry times, and added new events. So now the majority of club members will be able to swim. There are prizes for each age group, and speeding tickets for those who bust the qualifying times. To encourage novice swimmers, we allow entries for events that you haven’t swum before, so you can enter with No Time! All the details are available on our website. The meet is run on a first come, first served basis , so when it is full it will be closed to entries. As this meet is open to all other clubs, you need to get your entries in as soon as possible. More details will follow, but do start to look at the events you would like to enter.
This meet is also a massive fundraiser for the club, and helps to pay for the extras we need to run the club!
Luton SC Open Meet
We are looking to attend the Sunday of this meet (we have SPILLS 2 on the Saturday). Sunday 28th April
This is a Level 3 meet with upper and lower qualifying times. So if your times fall within those limits you can enter. Please fill in an individual entry form, make cheques payable to LBSC, or pay by BACS (that is cheaper for the club),Pass your entry forms to me, Kate Faulkner or your session manager, no later than Friday 15th February . We have been advised this meet is filling fast! and is already over 50 % full. This is a first come first served meet, so we have to get our entries in before it is full…hopefully!
This is an opportunity for those seeking BAGCAT regional times , as your closing date is 15th May
Peterborough Open Meet
The Youth Regional closing date is 9th April. This meet 5-7th April ,represents the closest meet (closer than Norwich!) to us to gain those times. I doubt any coaches will be in attendance, but a coaches pass will be attained.
